Mixed Up magazine + Giveaway

Hello there!

Have you heard of the new Mixed Up magazine? Some of you probably have and for those who have not, Mixed Up is a new digital and interactive magazine packed with mixed media inspiration. 

What does 'interactive' mean? Well that's a whole lot of cool at a click of a finger. When you subscribe or purchase an issue you will be able to list through the pages on your phone, tablet or on a computer. Wherever you see a 'play' button you can watch a video. Where you see a row of dots you will be able to list through images. It's great! The first October issue came with 86 pages, each filled with tutorials, images of works of very talented mixed media artists and crafters, freebies, giveaways and more! 

I was really looking forward to this day as I knew there would be another November issue ready for me to enjoy!

Katy Leitch is the editor of this wonderful magazine and talking about giveaways, she very kindly agreed to giveaway not one, but TWO FREE copies of the November issue via our blog! How to win...

Magdalena Kusy aka eMKa

My name is Magda on internet eMKa. I live in Poland. My projects are created in a small corner of my bedroom ;)

I'm a part of DT in a two Polish producers scrapbook papers (AltairArt - http://www .altairart .pl/) and chipboards (SnipArt - http://sni part.pl/ ) and one of a crafty shop called Skarbnica Pomys (http://ska rbnicapomy slow.pl/).

My project s can be found on my blog, on my Facebook, or My YouTube channel. 

Today I prepared for you an altered fish can, which will be my decoration for Halloween. In this project I used: SnipArt chipboards (Polish producer) and
old wire pulled out from some old engine. Also, I used: black gesso, whiet gesso, gel medium, metallic and glitter paints, mists, mica flaces,
microspheres in various size and colors and inka gold.

I hope that you like this project and that one day I will be able to return as Guest Designer :)

Guest Designer: HEATHER THOMPSON

I hope you are all well and having fun. I have a special guest here today, Heather Thompson, our last winner. She created the most amazing layout and I personally couldn't wait to see what inspiration she'd bring along for our new challenge: Assemblage/Altered Art. Be prepared to be amazed! Here it goes...

Heather Thompson 

My name is Heather Thompson, I live in rural Wisconsin on my own little piece of heaven with my husband and two fun kids, Olivia-8, and Maksim-6. I am a registered nurse by night and a avid crafter and gardener by day. I have dabbled in scrapbooking since my daughter was born in 2008, but have been creating seriously since 2014. I love having the freedom to create based on my mood and environment, so with that being said I can't say I have a particular style that screams “This is Me.”. I love all styles and genres and love to much my creative mind.

Frame: I used an 5 x 7 inch canvas frame and used the back side of it. After applying a layer of gesso as a primer I decoupaged some tissue paper randomly on the canvas and around the sides. I then used a stencil and molding paste to add more dimension to the piece. I even added texture to the center knowing I would eventually be covering a majority of it up. I used a combination of Alcohol Inks and Lindy's Sprays to give the right color combo I was looking for.


Relic: I found the relics that would work and fit with still giving some area to see the background. I then Applied a thick layer of texture Paste Graphite (Finnabair) to the lower portion of the Imperial Egg, after drying, a layer of white gesso on both top and bottom portions. I again used the alcohol in to give it the vibrant red colour. The top valleys of the egg where filled with glitter glass and then filled over with some liquid glass. ( Side Bar: I should have used some Ice Resin for a clearer dried end result, but 1. didn't want to mix it up for such a small amount, and 2. I am impatient and didn't want to wait 24 hours for dry time.) After both pieces were dry I then used a hogs hair brush and dry brushed a fine layer of black gesso over the whole piece.

After adhering the imperial egg to the base, From past experiences, there is a right way and a wrong way to put the base and relic together. Patiences is a virtue here. I used some "Loctite" Super Glue Gel Control to apply the diamond chain around the base. It gives enough time to work with the piece.
Then was just adding the finishing touches and embellishments. The red and black reminded me of a deck of cards and the Imperial Egg itself reminded me of Alice in Wonderland's Queen of Hearts. So hence the composition was born.

MMW#19: Assemblage/Altered Art

Hi everyone! 

It's time for a new challenge! Whoohoo! We had some amazing entries last month and I'd like to thank you for participating. We will announce the winners on Wednesday next week so don't forget to come back to check out the results! 

We're here with inspiration for our new challenge - Assemblage/Altered Art. The reason we are broadening the theme is because we are aware that assemblage is not everyone's cup of tea and we wouldn't want you to feel left out. The whole purpose of these challenges is to have fun.

I love creating mosaics but it is quite a messy hobby to do at home, so I basically practice it once a year :))) Last year I made this nautical picture frame for my son using broken glass pieces and various beads.

Guest Designer: Maayan Leizer

Hello there!

I hope you're well. 

I am here to welcome and introduce a Guest Designer today. This talented lady is called.. 

Maayan Leizer 

My name is Maayan, I'm soon to be 33, married, vegan and have two cats.

I own a local online crafts store called Mr. Kitty Crafts and also have an Etsy store where I offer my creations for sale.

I started my way in scrapbooking about 3 years ago, fell in love with mixed media and most of my creations are in shabby chic, vintage or steampunk style.

I love winter, cats, aged and old items and am so happy to have found such pleasure in paper crafts.

My artwork: 9.5*7.5 inches canvas.

Purple is one of my favorite colors, it can be mysterious, royal, enchanted, interesting and calming. 

That's why I chose to create my enchanted forest in purple and turquoise. The unicorn along with the text suggest that even when the journey seems unknown, frightening, dark, almost impossible - you should take it, because you may discover yourself or at least find something new and exciting. I feel I'm going through one of those journeys in the past year.
